But for a good part of two centuries it was Chatham Square. No bit of Earth has ever been more New York than that chaotic piece of real estate. Perhaps no where else in the United States has had such an effect on our popular culture than what rose up from the sidewalks along the Bowery as it spilled from Canal Street to the swamp that was the Five Points. Tattoos and tap dance are two off the tip of my tongue. Now there is not much there to speak of.The square is little more than an open wound on the hip of the city where the new Chinatown has been pulled apart from the old Chinatown, letting in some sunlight and fresh air, a space to plant a few statues. That's Lin Zexu in the above photo. Mr. Lin was a 19th Century reformer who initiated but pretty much lost the war on opium.
